U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky announced Monday that she would not seek a 15th term, sparking a scramble for candidates seeking to represent a district that includes parts of Chicago’s north side and northern suburbs.

The 80-year-old Illinois Democrat serves as a chief deputy whip and ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. She represents the 9th Congressional District of Illinois.

“It is now time for me to pass the baton,” Schakowsky said. “We are so fortunate in the 9th District that there are dozens of talented leaders, advocates, and organizers who know our community and who are ready to lead the charge as we fight back against the extreme MAGA agenda and President Donald Trump’s shameful policies.”

Schakowsky said she was proud of her work on the Affordable Care Act, the healthcare overhaul measure that passed in 2010.

“I was honored to help draft and pass the Affordable Care Act, ensuring that Americans could no longer be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions and providing quality health coverage for millions,” she said.

Schakowsky’s announcement makes her the second Illinois congressional member to retire this spring. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, also 80, announced late last month that he would not run for reelection.
